Would a rear axle off a 1993 Grand Cherokee fit under my 1997 Cherokee Sport? Would everything match up ok?

i may be wrong, but i think the grands have a coil sprung rear suspension, and the sports are leaf sprung.

so you would have to cut all the mounts off the axle and weld on spring perches.

if you are looking for an upgraded axle thats an easy swap. check into a ford 8.8 out of an explorer, or merc. mountaineer.

They would not match up. What are you wanting to do?  Do want to upgrade or do you just need to replace parts?

I believe its a Chrysler 8.25... If its welded up your gunna need a new carrier, spider gears and side gears.

Could be the mighty 35. Do you have ABS?  I would hit up a junk yard and buy the whole assembly if you have the money. It will be cheaper than new gears.

So I'm still workin on the axle thing and I've went and looked everywhere and talked to everyone. The tags on the cover have "35" and "7037" stamped on them. I assume these mean its a dana 35 and the other is the gear ratio?

No, there should be more numbers.  If you can take a pic of the diff cover and post it up or send it to me and I'll ID it for you.

Also are the spiders welded to just themselves or to the carrier as well?

7037 isnt the gear ratio, do you have abs?

Rear Axles

Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89

Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01

Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96

Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01

Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some (not all) XJs equipped with towing package.

Note: Dana 35 axles sometimes referred to as Dana 35C - The "C" does not stand for c-clip. It stands for "custom" meaning it came from Dana unfinished.

Note: 8.25 axles - none of these axles were used on XJ's with ABS brakes. If you have ABS, you have the Dana 35. Without ABS you could have either axle. 8.25 axles are c-clip.

OK so I do have ABS. At least theres a light on the dash for it, I havent had to use it yet, lol. I dont remember exactly from when i tore it apart before but i think the gears were welded, whats more common, gears or carrier? And the pics here.

Thats the big, bad, dana 35. See if you can get some pics sometime of it with the cover off and pics of the spider and side gears.

Why is it the "big, bad, Dana 35?" And my u-joints went out in my driveshaft, yet another problem, and the guy i took it to asked for the rear yoke. He measured it and said it was off a Chrysler rear end?! :102:

That is not the Dana 35 that is a 8.25.  I'm guessing you really don't have ABS, I have the light too, the gauge cluster weren't different between ABS and non ABS.  The ujoints on the rear shaft are an easy fix, you can get both for less than $20.
