Need the fan shroud for anything?

I found that I had a waterpump leak, so I am in the process of replacing it.
(also found that the replacement pump doesn't have the studs to hold the fan on, so I'll be using short bolts I suppose)

Question:  Do I need to have the fan shroud for anything?  Or does it simply take up room?  I don't know, so any help is appreciated.

Yes, it's useful for cooling by directing air flow.

Great thank you for the info.

I also found out that I can re-use the studs from the old waterpump. 

So by my count, I've learned 2 new things today.  :)
