Help - please!
« on: 08/29/11 - 11:52PM »
2 months into owning my 2005 LJ Rubicon and it's STILL stalling!  Here is what has been thrown at this thing so far:

- New OPDA since the old one was worn and done
- New Camshaft
- New timing chain
- New Throttle Position Sensor
- New Plugs
- New Coil Pack

Dang thing still stalled at least 3 or 4 times on the trail this weekend and tried to die on me at a light tonight.  I'm absolutely spent on what to do next. I read on Jeepforum.com that it could the a dirty throttle.  It's spotless.

I've got a free large pizza and a six pack of whatever type of beverage you want to the first person who can help me get this addressed.  If I can't fix this thing I may jump off a cliff!

I am by no means mechanically inclined!  With that disclaimer, what about the Crankshaft Position Sensor?  I know of two cases ('Mr. Safety's' 4.3 and my granddaughter's recently acquired VW Beetle) where those were the symptoms.  Hers stalled several times in different situations just like yours.  A trip to the dealership confirmed it, and since its replacement she's had no problem.  Good luck with yours.

I forgot that on the list of parts replaced.  I've disconnected the battery to see if resetting the computer will help.

I have not.  And to be honest, I wouldn't even know how to do that.  Any pointers?

I don't know if obd scanner would show fuel pressure, only fuel filter on your Jeep is in the fuel tank :o is it only trying to die when it's hot? maybe vapor-locking? Is the gas cap original? Is exhaust stock? gas cap if not original may not be vented, gas lines too close to exhaust?

Like Larry said if fuel pressure is low may not keep up when hot.

Only way to check for water and fuel filter is to drop the tank.

Fuel pressure has been checked.  It's good to go.  It did it last night right after filling up at the gas station.  I'd been driving for maybe 20 minutes.

From all the forums I've read, I'm wondering if the O2 sensor is going out.  Thoughts?

Man Greg, what a problem! I know the guys at Son Rays service center pretty good as well as a couple of guys at Central dodge and I'll check with them when I get a chance.

Dwain @ Son Ray's used to carry a spare crankshaft sensor in his glove box for his Jeep, maybe you got a bad one, but I would think you would get some kind of code from computer.

If it was mine, Id probably go ahead and pull the tank and check filter and go ahead and shotgun the fuel pump and filter since i had it apart--but I haven't checked the price of a pump either!

I wouldn't think you have water in the tank since it always gives you trouble when it's hot---something is breaking down--either electrical or fuel?

I've got an appointment with Youngblood tomorrow.  They are going to run diagnostics on the thing.  What's another $120 when I've already dropped a TON into this thing.

I want to know what parts to throw at it next if I can.

Throwing parts at it isn't always the best idea even when frustrated.  You increase your variables.

Have you check harness to fuel pump and CPS?

CPS was done too.  Any hints on how to check the harness?
