Post by: junkyard on 08/ 6/06 - 11:35PM
Finally,  i got barrett over to the dark side.

specs will follow later. but this should be a nice nice rig.

on a small budget using great parts

60 front
14 bolt rear
4:56 gears
agr steering ram assist
39 boggers
tj body
tubes everywhere coming soon
FI chevy v8
built th400
dana 300
SR

this should be a nice rig to wheel

i think i can get him at least 6-8 more inches of flex with his current springs.

how much do you expect to have in this rig after its all said and done?

Post by: junkyard on 08/21/06 - 11:24PM
it is up to barrett if he wants to disclose the amounts, but ill tell you for what he has yould spend about 12k or more.

he is way under that. now if i were charging him per hour and per mind change he would be way over that.  he got some good deals on parts from folks i know so that helps out tremendously.

Glad to see that old jeep is getting new life... If you'd only seen it the first time I laid eyes on it... YIKES.

Post by: Liberty03 on 08/22/06 - 10:26AM
We figured it got hit in the front pretty good cause the body mounts were shifted back a bit.  But other than that the body is basically perfect.
Title: Re: liberty03 goes open top
Post by: YJ_Aaron on 08/22/06 - 10:36AM
If it was hit it was before I saw it.  When I saw it they had it on  a 1 ton dodge frame that had a good 24" of mud on every surface... the only thing that wasn't mud was the beer cans that lined the inside.
Title: Re: liberty03 goes open top
Post by: junkyard on 08/22/06 - 10:56AM
it had a good 200 pounds of mud still in it when we got it. i got most of it out but got tired so i stopped.  it is coming together nicely, i should have the motor in tonight and start wiring it up, have to finish a fj55 though this week so i wont get super in depth in the cytj
Title: Re: liberty03 goes open top
Post by: YJ_Aaron on 08/22/06 - 10:59AM
It was so bad when terry got it that you couldn't id axles or even tell how body was attached to the frame.  The front axle that came out of it had 0 gear oil all muddy water, lockouts were solid mud.

gonna finish welding the motor mounts and start on the clocking of the dana300. then ill build a flat mount for it.

after that is done ill buuild the cage for it and start wiring in the new steering column and installing the agr box and ram.

trying to get this project trail ready for fall4x fest and fallcrawl.

i think it is coming along nicely. ill post some pics tonightafter im done working on it for the day

worked on the tubing a bit, tube fenders almost done, and stinger mocked into place.  will make the rad hoop (inside and out) and tie in shock hoops.  this will all be bolt on so that it can be removed should Barrett need to pull the motor or something like that.  will fill in the sides and part of the top with some 1/8th in sheet.

i will post pics of that.

Post by: junkyard on 09/28/06 - 09:52PM
started on the radiator hoop tonight, got it mounted to the fenders. the grill will mount to that, and that whole assembly will bolt to the frame. the stinger will be a part of that all.  Barrett wants the long comp looking stinger, so thats what he is getting.  I think this weekend we will start on the cage.

well we did a little bit today, installed the steering column, the wiring harness, the brake booster and master cylinder  and cleaned the last 100 pounds of mud out of it. even got yelled at by the owner of the car wash.

decided that i wanted to mount barretts grill to the fenders and rad hoop, so we did.  i have to say it looks awsome and is going to work well.

got the dana 300 mounted into my toyota, and gawked some at my new swampers.

oh also got the old cage out (anyone want to buy a tj cage?)

i will be doing the rollcage this week and we are going to try to have this ready at least to wheel by maybe 4xfest.  definately for a run near thanksgiving

oh and myke, i have no clue where your yellow hammer is

well the 60 cover is ready for the cytj, it will beinstalled so i can weld tabs on it for hyd assist

it has countersucnk holes and a drain plug on the bottom for ease in chaning fluid

also started on the cage. i like the poison spider looking ones, but had to change it a bit to make it more of what i like.

just started tonight, will have more done tommorrow night or wednesday
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/w1r3ch4s3r/rollcadeside.jpg)

that is just the top rails, it will have quite a few stringers running all over it.  youll see more of it in the next day or so,

Post by: junkyard on 10/ 3/06 - 12:07AM
in this paint pic, the red is going to be added, and the blue will go behind the seats and on the side of the jeep. there will be other tubes welded in, i just didnt draw the lines for them

there is no dash, so the cage will become that too.

none of this will be external to the body except the rocker sliders.
and i hope a soft top will fit.

Why did you decide to do the sidebars two pieces?  Just wondering if it is a aesthetic thing or something else.  Mine are all one piece and I never thought about doing it with two.

which ones are you meaning as the side bars?

the ones that run from the windshield back to the back?

the reasoning for that is simple, you get your most strength from straight pieces.  that one ties all the straight ones together, there will be 48 inch pieces that string those together, also if he were to get to where he is sliding his cage against some rocks, it will slide and not hace hangups.

i think it gives it a smooth racey look to it.

tonight was roll cage night. at 2 am i called it quits, so here is what i got accomplished, first i installed a new windshield, took a whopping 28 minutes to cut out the old and urithane in the new.  very nice (barrett dont break it for a while)

then the cage. i am pleased with some of my progress. had to modify my notcher as it takes a different than norm bit.

here are some pics.

 Okay - the side bars are the bars on the side.  The a pillar would be the bar that runs vertically by the windshild, b pillar beside the seat, and so on.

So my original question, Geoff, is why did you do the sidebar in two pieces.  Mine runs from the floor by my left foot all the way to the rear wheelhouse.  I understand why you did it the way you did it and mine is the same other than the sidebars being two peice.
Title: Re: Barretts CYTJ build thread (ozark offroad fab)
Post by: junkyard on 10/ 7/06 - 10:51PM
well the top rail runs from the windshield mount to the rear of the tub, a welded joint in the a pillar takes up less space. the smallest 1.75 in die is 5.5 clr and to me that looks gawdy. also the joint the way i did it becomes a node which is stronger.  the windsheild mount is not the main focus on the strength of the cage.  it is strong enough not to collapse, but the main focus is above the drivers head.

with the final gussetting, this will be a super strong cage.

so i guess, a part is astetics, the other is is what i feel is stronger.  a straight a pillar would be stronger, yet we always bend them to match the windsheild and weaken the tubing.

i have yet to roll one the same way 2 times with different styles of a pillars.  i just prefer to be a bit different in my approach i guess

All I can say is this cage is beef, this entire rig is well built and I can't wait to get it out next weekend to break it in right.
Title: Re: Barretts CYTJ build thread (ozark offroad fab)
Post by: OJTV8CJ on 10/ 8/06 - 04:56PM
I definately wasn't bagging on it and assumed that the joint was made up for that purpose.  I "personally" don't like the look but that is why I bend my cages differently.  I was just confirming that he was wanting to keep that windshield mount, which means that he is planning on running his windsheild.

Thanks for the clarification, Geoff.  If you are going to be at Fall Fest I will get with you then.

I can give you all the stuff that I want because of this thread:

Have a nice day.

BTW - Everytime that I have referred to those bars I have called them sidebars because they are not hoops.  Hoops run DS to PS, Halo's are a continuous bar over the driver area, and side bars are on the side.

Nope - it has taken me a while to get where I am.  I learn something new all the time.  But, I also don't post pics of crappy welds and then turn around 6 months later saying that I wanted to fabricate stuff for other people.     Did you take a class or just been practicing?

well i wont bag on anyones anything, starting this business, there will be people who dont like somethings and will look for me to bag so they have a reason to mouth.

i have no real favorite style of rollcage. i like the halo, the traditional hoop style, and other ones that just come up.  i am not a perfect welder, some look great (controlled areas) some look not so so great. i do get enough penetration and so forth.

i am not bluetorch or poison spider. i dont want to be either. my stuff is a hobby. i dont make alot of money, but i enjoy building stuff and seeing people have a great time in the things i modify, build, or whatever.

so with that all said, barrett came over today and we got a little bit done. had some wrong parts, but should still fire it up this week and be ready for fall 4xfest

on the "A" pillars, there will be a 3" wide 1/4" flat plate that will weld to the outside of the tubing outward and bolt into the existing holes of the tj tub.  this is the strongest part of the tub and will add a significant amount of strength to the a pillar.

i like to tie them into that section for strength reasons and in some cases it looks cool too. i am lucky as barrett and given me alot o room to do what i want.  since i ran out of tubing, the rest of the cage work will have to wait till tommorrow to see if they have a bundle for me to pick up.

i will be adding a holy crap handle on the pass. side and a lower tube (dash stringer addon) so that it can be filled with steel and made into a gauge cluster.  there are some stringers to go into the roof section still and some other 45* brace tubes.

Brad i never take your questions or comments as bagging, since i have talked with you several times in person, i know you and take your stuff as either wanting to know something or as constructive.  cause neither one of us have a wheeling jeep, we always make someone elses wheel first.......lmao

toyotaguy, im still gonna add it, i thought i had another stick of tube, but it turned out to be soe 2 inch sched 80 stuff.

since it is a sunday, i couldnt call up for a bundle of tubing so i have to wait till the weekdays

didnt get a bunch done tonight, tommorrow night will be the treat.

tommorrow nights goal is this

new bushings front to back
brake lines front to back
steering box install and steering link built
driveshafts
clock dana300 up 3-5 more degrees
build transfercase crossmember
finish cage
install radiator
start the thing
flush hydraulic assist sustem then weld mount to tierod

then all we have left is the exhaust

i fel i will be doing another all nighter on this to get it ready. will provide plenty of pics of the dirty work tommorrow night late.

Post by: junkyard on 10/12/06 - 10:53AM
too tired to post pics at 1am or so, but we fired it up last night, swapped in the long tail shaft dana300 and took out the short shaft one.  installed the new shackles front and rear and installed brake lines and the twin stick.

still have a long way to go, probably no pics tonight because i see another late late night.

things left to do are

radiator
driveshafts (install)
bleed brakes
finish cage and install last 2 seats
install agr steering box and have hydraulic lines built then bleed system
exhaust
build tranny crossmember
finish fuel lines
shocks and shock hoops

and thats all

Why swap out a short shaft for a long shaft?
Title: Re: Barretts CYTJ build thread (ozark offroad fab)
Post by: junkyard on 10/12/06 - 10:59AM
the reasonfor that, is an upgraded tail shaft is not available for the short shaft.

these only came out in 1 or 2 years.  barrett wants to get a 32 splined tail shaft and cannot with the short. in my toyota i am not worrying about that, so i put my long shaft in his and his short shaft into mine.

there is only 1 inch difference in the length of a short vs. long

last night got the driveshafts in, the twin stick mounted and hooked up, rear flex brake lines in and braided steel line in and picked up some tubing.

still a bunch to do, so looks like i have an all nighter tonight to get it done for tommorrow.  so much to do, so little time when your a 1 man operation with help here and there

well i didnt get it done in time, there were just a few things that came up and i couldnt get them done in time.

here are a couple pics of some progress.  the agr steering box is on, just need to drill out the pitman arm and install the drag link.

the hyd assist ram is on with the bracket tacked t the tie rod. it is bled out and works flawlessly.  the driveshafts are in, radiator and tranny cooler.

i got the pass side shock hoop made and mounted and the rear shocks on.

also have the new shackles on at all corners.

well i am happy to say that the shake down run was better than expected

destroyed a ujoint and the caps, but found only a couple things it needed.

lockers front and rear (already knew that one)

alternator (it was bad but we didnt know it till we ran it)

traction link (one of my low profile ones)

but the carnage was limited to a u joint, straps, hydraulic line,  return line on the power steering

so im pleased and happy to say that it was Barrett who did the carnage with the front tires off the ground romping up this rocky hill and as it landed he throttled it hard and KA----POWWWWWWWWWWWWW went the rear u joint.

we did get some on hand trail fixes, left front hud needing some attention, changed a battery mid mid trail and got some winching time in.

also have a list of trail tools he needs in his rig.

so here are some pics

the yj is Mykes, and it was our winchin rig of the day, it wheeled great and it was its maiden voyage too.  it has tons of flex and the suspension really worked well. it flexed nicely and i believe Myke is happy with it.

well also friday night i made the flat belly skid plate and trans mount.

had to change the fuel pump at the run as it wasnt putting out enough pressure.

the rig ran great, jsut a few fixes and itll be an awsome trail rig for Barrett.  we all had fun

well got barretss rig fixed, designed a traction link, will build it this week sometime, and wheeled it around my shop some, rocks and mud and an old drained pond with some challenging banks and v notch.

i got to lay his jeep on its side in the notch when the rear drivers bogger came off the rim.

i think barrett was ticked, but i had fun.  the power steering leak is fixed and we took care of some other things.  hopefully if there is a run on the 25th, barrett will want to go and we will take it out and wheel the snot out of it this time. no shake down

it might be hard to tell, but does your crossmember bolt up? it looks to be welded on

btw, i really like the cage, very simple and strong.
nice flex also

it is welded for now. at 2am the morning of a wheeling shake down, there arent many stores open. so i welded it on. it will be bolted later.

i will bolt it by sleeving the frame with a piece of tubing and running a bolt through it and the crossmember.

well at least for now, we dont have a problem with bolts breaking or loosening up.......lol

it took alot of steep inclines and declines to finally find one the would actually rub the skid plate.  the break over angle on this rig is high.  it takes alot to get it to rub. i believe it to be around 28 inches or so to the bottom of the skid.  and the wheelbase is only 2 inches over stock
