jeep repair
« on: 02/20/07 - 06:11PM »
(cross post to KC Jeep Club)

95 YJ

Just got back from the dealership, found out I need the rear diff rebuilt (bearings). They quoted me right at about 600.00 for this job, about 165.00 in parts and 420.00 for 6 hours of labor. I haven't gotten any more quotes on this, and I really don't know much about how much this should be costing. So, any thoughts on the price and/or what I should be paying to have this done?

Thanks for the time...

What gears are in the jeep?  For more personal labor but a LOT less $ you could swap in a different stock axle with good gears in it.

Most people will sell you a 35 they have replaced with bigger axle for $100 or less.

$420 for labor sounds pretty steep. Give Phil's Auto Repair in Marshield.... he completely rebuilt and installed new gears on my D44's at a heck of whole lot better price on labor than that quote.

His number is 417-468-2339

I'm guessing he's from around Kansas City, so Phil's may be a little far.
I'd put something funny here, but you probably wouldn't get it anyway...

well shoot .. with the money he would save he could have a weekend getaway in Branson while his jeep got fixed. :agree:

But may be worth his drive for that price  If he made a early long weekend he could spend a day at SMORR.  :beerchug:

I'm guessing on average the job should be around $300-$400 for a rebuild kit and labor at a 4x4 shop.

Sounds like dsus4's Jeep is his DD and might just explode it driving it down here from KC.  I'm all for suggesting a vendor you're familiar with, but he didn't ask where to take it, just if he was being quoted an exorbatant price by the dealer.  As a rule of thumb, the dealership will almost always be higher than any other independent shop.

Dsus4, get a phone book out and start calling local shops in your area and tell them what the dealer told you was wrong and see what it would cost in your area.

Good luck,
Keith

Seventy bucks an hour? Sounds steep to me. Glad I do my own.
