T18/d20 or sm465/np205?
« on: 08/19/08 - 03:23PM »
I would like to know whether or not an sm465/np205 combo from a late 70's chevy shortbed will fit into my cj7 with a stock wheelbase. Is it to long? I have seen a couple jeeps with that combo and I plan on running 37 or bigger tires on my jeep.I already have 1 tons axles and seems more cost effective to go with the chevy parts to have a chance of them holding up.

I had a 465  and 205 in a YJ. with a 60 rear. the shaft was kinda short but it worked. I do not know what the length difference between a ford and Chevy are but my understanding is they are the same tranny for the moth part. I also had the AA bell housing to a 4.0L  so there may have been some added length there. I really do not remember

I will be using a 14 bolt full floater and a 350 chevy,so I probably will have a shorter engine ,but a longer pinion.

If your going for bulletproof, use the 205, if you want to have to upgrade parts run the 20.  If your going 1 tons and XX tire why not consider a lil stretch to wheelbase?

How much of a stretch is common and can I still use the same frame without lenghtening it?

about 5" with xj springs. if you do coils you can go 12" or more.

So I would need to use xj springs front and rear? Remember that this thing still has to be driven on the street, because I am in no situation to spend ten grand or more on just a "trail rig",it has to be multi-purpose,and reliable, and coil suspensions cost a lot, don't they? I am a drivetrain man,not a suspension guy.HeHe :106:
