Depends on the spline count. Most 205's were 10 spline from manual tranies. The auto's had a 32 spline count. The factory chevy adaptor is getting pretty hard to find anymore- but advance does now make a new copy of the original. What did your 400 come out of? If it's a Jeep th400- i believe they were bolted to quadra tracs-  some quadra track transfers shared the same bolt pattern as the np231 and dana 300's, but again- the spline count will make ALL the difference- check that first.

It won't matter if it's a Jeep TH400- since the back of the tranny is the same for both Chevy and Jeep TH400's- just have to count the splines and see. IF it's a 32 spline- then a chevy NP205 from another Auto will bolt up with the stock Chevy adaptor.

I have a 300 behind mine.

Of course I changed the main shaft and have the adapter on mine tho.  Best 175 dollars I ever spent.
I cut sheetmetal for free.  It's fixing it that get's expensive.

Ok, I found some better info for you. It's from JPMagazine- Oct 07.
TH400
  Forward gearing: 2.48, 1,48, 1.0
  Approx length: 24.25"
  Output shaft: Long- found in 2wd car and truck versions OR mated to NP205 TC;
                Medium- 32 spline version mated to NP 208;
                Short- 32 spline version mated to NP 203
  Found in: GM cars and trucks, Jeep FSJ pick ups and wagons, and Jeepsters
  Note: Jeep cases were re-designed in 1974 with AMC- specific bellhousing and case. WAY
        strong and capable of handling severe abuse and big power. Most internals are the
        same as the GM version. Oil pan shape can cause some driveshaft interference on pass side drop TC.

Hope this helps a little.

I am pretty sure that if it is a jeep 400 and had a quad junk on it then a dana 300 will work.

Count the spline coming out of your 400.  However you have to purchase an adapter to go to a dana 300 case.  Your output isn't going to be a 23 spline like jeep 300's or 231's.

It depends on the tranny, the early model turbo 400 in jeeps had an adapter between the engine and the tranny, these specific ones had a dana 20 transfer. These also had a different tranny output shaft and adapter between the tranny and transfer. The ones with quadratrac are worthless unless you change the output shaft of the tranny for one out of a dana 20 backed tranny. Yeah if that makes any sense. 8)
Yeah I gots a jeep, and yes I understand. I also have a car.
