Best place around to gear and lock axles??
« on: 11/ 4/08 - 02:34PM »
Ok probably next summer (certainly after Christmas, kids are first)
I am thinking I will re-gear (currently 3:07 on 33's) and swap out the d35 for whatever I can get by then, 8.8, d60/70!!  and lock it front and rear.

What shop would be good to have the install done?

I'm a fan of Wilderness4x4 in Marshfield, across from Wal-Mart. He did mine for me and stands by his work.
He can do it all, lockers, gears.. whatever.

What gears are you wanting to go with?  Are you wanting a shop that will setup gears or install the axles?

I will need an axle set up for a TJ and the gears and lockers installed. I would do it sooner but i dont want to put the money into a d35.

8.8's are a good option since they are factory with 4:10's, and you could find a 4cyl front with 4:10s.  That would be your cheapest options, then install lockers of your choice.

I'd personally send you to Safari in Nixa, they aren't the fastest but they do good work.

Yea I like 4ws but bolt ins are usualy high price no matter where you go, 4:10's will not due the trick I have a set of new 35's and will probably go bigger if i can, so looking at 4:56 - 4:88, I know a couple guys running 35's with 4:88 and they love it (they have Rubys).
An 8.8 with 4:88 and I'd like to have a 44 front but if 4:88 will go into a d30 I'll run it.

Yes you can run 4:88's in your 30.  I agree 4:10's aren't enough for 35's if you can avoid it.

Usually by the time you pay a shop labor rate $75 per hour give or take, along with parts etc the bolts ins get a little closer in price.

8.8 (junkyard) $350
gears          $150
install kit    $120
TJ Bracket     $200
Locker         $500 (minimum)
Ebrake kit     $ 50
Gear Labor     $250
Axle Labor     $750 (10hrs)

Total for rear $2,370  I've never priced a bolt in rear axle with a comparable locker (no arb or OX for $500) how far off is that?

ox plus cable closer to $800+;  ARB I think $700ish but then I need to plum air to it.

so yea I guess the price draws in closer. Have to put some pennys back

ARB's are usually about $800, compressor another $200.  If your going to drop the $ go selectable.  I've run just about every locker out there and its worth it.

Bolt In rear TJ axles start at $1999 with Detroit or ECTED and Superior shafts.  Either way, spend the money on a non-c-clip axle instead of upgrading the D35....you'll be way ahead.

Just a heads up, there is a rumor that ARB prices may go WAY up next year (they might be at or over $1000 per locker).

I'm not realy wanting to + up my d35, thought about trussing it and chromolly shafts 35 spline I think and an OX locker. but we'll see what happens.
But for 2k that sounds like a pretty good route.

I agree my milage is not that great atleast when I run the air2 compresors and an auto. tranny draggs it down. I would watch the forms for some rubicon axels as well some time s you see some pretty good prices on built rubi axels for $3 to $4k rare but I have seen them. if not then bolt ins or safari would be my choice
