304 V8 WITH VALVE TRAIN NOISE
« on: 08/22/06 - 08:51PM »
Hey, I just went and looked at a 79 cj7 with a 304 in it. It seemed to run good but at an idle it had a lot of noise under the valve covers. If you gave it a sliver of gas it would quit down to no noise. The owner said this is normal with amc v8s but I never have heard that before. Any ideas? Thanks Mark

Sounds Like Low oil pressure which in turn makes the lifters noisy. It like that On my 4.2 liter. But I am not sure on the V8's

My old Wagoneer had the same problem.  It had a 360, though.  If it's built anything like the 360s, the oil pump is intigrated into the timing chain cover, and a rebuild is costly.  Not only do you have to buy the seals, but the guts, and if the housing itself is bad, the covers are very high.  Mine turned into a nightmare & i finally sold it.   The ticking, however was rather random, with the common being at startup, and it either going away after warm-up, or fading at any rpm above 1200.  It ran like a top, but idling at 5 psi oil pressure kinda bothered me.
