XJ fender slashing problem!!!
« on: 09/ 7/06 - 06:07PM »
I have a 91 XJ with a 5inch lift and i just put my 31X10.50 on my TJ and got 35 X 12.50 's . Now I have an issue with fenders. i dont have a problem cutting the front its the rear I dont know what to do with . I want to keep the 5 inch lift but I need to cut more than to the pinch weld. is there a way or will it hurt it if I do cut passed the pinch welds? Im trying to get ready for the fest in Oct.

It is actually easier than you think.

Mark where the top of the fender flare is and trim the inside and outside skins.  Pie shape cut the inner so that you can take a porta power or hydraulic jack and push it back out to meet the outer skin.  Then tack weld around it and finish weld it.  Then all you have to do is go back and fill in where you pie shaped the inner.  I did that and bobbed the back corners of the one that I used to work on.

If you are goin to be at the meeting in it I can show you exactly what I mean.

Pie shape the point of the inner fender to the center of the wheel well?  Just to make the inner fender a brace?   I have cut mine but stayed short on the back as not to jeopardize strength.

Any help will be appreciated.....any pics?

thanks

Mark around the top of the flare.

Cut that out.  You can tell that also bobbed the bottom of the rear quarter also.  It will look like this:

You can see the cuts in this picture.  Don't cut the pinch seam - just close to it.

Then when you start welding it, you should start to see this.

Finished from the bottom of the rear corner.

Cleaned up and primed for paint should look like this.

This is your brain on XJ's.  Any questions?   :agree:

It isnt as extreme as the one above, but it doesnt take as long.  I hope it helps.
