what axles to use TJ ?
« on: 12/20/08 - 09:30PM »
For my 2000TJ 4.0L automatic

I have a chance to get a Ford front dana 60 driver side drop and a dana 60 Ford rear, an 8.8 also a 44 front, I dont know any more about the 44.

I will be on at least 35's and locked front and rear. I want the axles shortened to fit the Jeep.

You'll be fine with the 44 and 8.8 if you plan to stay with 35" tires or under... though with 35's you'll want to upgrade to Chromoly axles if you ever plan on using the skinny pedal without breaking something.. if bigger than 35" is what you want... then go with the D60's.

yea I say I'll stay at 35's, for as much wheeling I do I may go up to 37's I would like the piece of mind that I have 60's and will probably not push their capability. I try to stay off the gas pedal sometimes you need a bump.

Now for ground clearance of a d60 with 35's going to be an isssue? I will run 35's for awhile (already have them).

Now who cuts down axles and can re-spline them?
Do I realy need to cut them down? I read they are about 4-5 inches longer on each side? can a offset rim bring it back close to the normal jeep stance.

dana 60s are a little overkill for 35s. you will loose a TON of ground clearance under the diff. i wouldnt want a 60 till i was at 37s or larger.

the dana 44 8.8 combo with alloy shafts would be a good setup for 35s.

thinking the 8.8 and I wouldnt have to worry about it being to wide. loosing the clearance ia an issue to me but the stregth of the 60 would be great..................

I think 8.8 may be the trick and with upgrades to it I should be Good to Go.

you can do a shave on the dana 60 and have more clearance than a dana 44.

I saw that while researching axles but I didnt get far enough to read how much can be shaved. See if I can find a page on that.  Thanks

That 9"/D44 is halt ready for you. You can link your jeep and do LA's since they are already set up for a 3 link

Well looks like I'll be getting a Dana60 and dana 44 front, 3/4 ton Ford as doners.

So a blue torch disc conversion, 2 selectable lockers, 4.88's, TJ brackets, new rims, new tires, -sigh- So much to do such a little wallet lol

stopped while taking Andrea to a dr apt and talked to Shane and Kevin (4WS), after talking awhile I am narrowed down to an OX up front and a OX or detroit in the rear. Of course nothing is ever concrete until it's installed LOL

I did end up getting 1" MML and 4 of the grab handles he had on special those are really nice OH CRAP straps, maybe Andrea wont have to claw my dash anymore HA!

Good overall choice on the axles.  If you can swing it i'd still have the rear 60 shaved.  Even on 36's mine still drags a lot even being offset.

yea I've read the article on shaving the 60 it seems like a doable project for me, but an after market dif cover may be hader to convert.

I looked at the pics again the front is a HP44 so better clearance there for the yoke.
