Need a D60 for 37's?
« on: 01/20/09 - 08:06PM »
So I am getting my Commando going and have am deciding on the axles to run from what I have available.  I am running a 360/T18A/D20 on a shortened Wagoneer frame and will probably stick with 35's... but I MIGHT go as large as 37's.  A Philip has some of those cool Military 37's for sale, but I don't know if that size may be too big for the rig (don't want it jacked real high)

I have a set of D44's from a 77 J10 and a D60/D44 from a J20 (though the 60 rear is from an offset QT setup, but on a 104" wheelbase, I don't think that should be a big deal).

If I beef up the 44's, do I really need the 60?  I have heard it can be shaved down to 44 size, but it will still be heavier.  I am not building a mega rock-buggy, but climbing rocks is the sport out here in the Ozarks, so I get into some of that.

Your experienced opinions are appreciated,

Jesse

They are stronger than a 44, but not as strong as an HD60.  The full floating takes the load of the weight off the shafts, bigger ring and pinion, etc.  However for 37's I wouldn't say you need a 60 unless just wanting to go 8 lug etc.  Alloy shafts in a 44 will get you close to same strength at shaft and just have a weaker ring and pinion.
