Truck tires
« on: 12/ 9/09 - 04:13PM »
Okay, I'm gonna need tires for my 3/4 4x4 truck soon.

What do you all suggest I look at?

Stock tires are 265/70/17, I would like to go maybe one size bigger.  I want an all terrain tire, E rated.

Let me know,
Keith

Toyo Open Country A/T  will be my next truck tire.

I bought the KM2 from BFG a while back; nice tire and are mud terrain, but they wear fast. Gonna put the KM2 on the Cherokee and put the TOYO AT's on my truck.

Look at Dick Cepek Fun Country II's.  They come in a lot of sizes, go great in all weather, and are weight rated in 17's I believe.  The price is more tolerable than previous tires mentioned as well.

I am still a loyal fan of the BFG KOs.  I have one set that has 50K on them and is still going strong.

I have also had good luck with the Yokohama Geolander A/T-S  They have an LT 285/70/17 tire which would be your one step up from the 265/70/17.

Same goes for the BFG sizes.  (But BFG has a 275/70/17 as well)

I will say that, while being a 'P' tire...the BFG Rugged Trails are garbage.  They came stock on my Tundra and I can't wait to get rid of them.  The first BFG tire I have ever had that I can't stand.

I'm not sure how many miles I have on the BFG Rugged Trail T/A E rated tires I have on my truck, but they've been good tires so far.  I have over 100k on my truck and they were on it when I got it.

I'm not wanting to spend over $180 a tire.  Rather around $150 each.  Thinking about Cooper Discoverer ATR maybe.

The OP is asking about tires for his 3/4ton street truck.  So offroad doesn't matter.
However I've seen KO's take a rig plenty of places offroad.
The KO is one of the best all weather tires for a heavy truck, 2nd set on the present cummins.

I know this isn't quite what you asked for, but I have the 255/75/17 bfg KMs from stock that I'd let go for $150. There are 5 and they are about half tread.

I'm considering these:

Wild Country XTX Sport  265/70/17 are $165 at Joe's Tire.

Okay, so the tires I want (285/70/17) in the Wild Country don't come in E rated, just D.  You all have seen my trailer and such, am I safe to run a D rated tire on my 3/4 ton truck?  Weight in the bed is never over 1500 lbs.  Wouldn't the D rated tires ride better too?  I know lots of guys do this, just covering my bases.

The D just shows the plies of the sidewall.  Mine are D's on my cummins and I tow more weight with no issues.  Just look at actual weight ratings.  When Sanchez was looking he found E's that were rated at C level and D's rated above E's based on thickness.

Yep, they have the same weight rating, but the 265 E is 3195 lbs @ 80psi and the 285 D is 3195 lbs @ 65psi.  The 285's are about $30/tire more than the 265's.  Looking around $200/tire now.

Dang, I can't decide now.  I want bigger tires, but don't want to make the wrong decision.  Where the hell is Barbato?  I need to see his truck again...
