Jeep Pinion Gear Swap
« on: 01/10/07 - 01:50AM »
I have a 1994 Wrangler with 4.0L/5-Spd and 3.07 dana 30 (front) and 35 (rear).  The addition of 32" tires really makes it lug around in 4th and 5th gear.  I am wanting to upgrade to 3.55 or possibly 3.73.  What size can I upgrade to without replacing the carrier?  On a tight budget.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You cheapest route would be to swap in a different set of stock axles with lower gears.

Like 4cylinder auto would have 3:73's and 4 cylinder manual would be 4:10s.

I've got a rear with 4:10's out of a YJ that could be bought cheap.

If you do that, go ahead and upgrade youre d35 to at least a d44.  It will be benifitial in the future.

With 3.07's, you will need to change the front and rear carriers.  The carrier breaks are:
D30: 3.54/3.73
D35: 3.07/3.55

Really, carriers aren't that expensive as long as you have open diffs, compared to the rest of the parts for the regear.  With 32s, you might think about 4.10 gears.
