Ford 9 inch or D60 Rear
« on: 10/25/09 - 03:36AM »
Have a 95 YJ and will, of course, begin the metamorphosis...

Looked at a shortend 9 inch(big bearing) with disk brakes, but no third member and also have a bud with a D60 to sell for cheap. Have a HP heavy duty 44 in the garage (full width). Plan is to run 35's-37's and if leagle keep streetable. Go full width and backspace with the D60/44 or go "stock" width and shorten the 44?
Will there be any clearence at all wth the D60 and 35"s? I could do a 35 spline axle in the 9 inch have a pretty bomb proof axle with 37's?
This is to be an "expedition type" rig and not a full blown buggy/crawler.
 Suggestions, experiance, edumacation.... :106:

With the 60 and 35s you will be dragging it on all sorts of things, many guys that run the 60 runs 38's+ tires. Besides the rear 60 has been know to be a "strength inclined" due to various reasons... But you could build it($$$). It seems like 60 stuff is generally more expensive than the 14 bolt, the 14 stuff is usually a dime a dozen for stock parts, even aftermarket stuff is usually cheaper. If your wanting to go full width or tons you could do a 14 bolt rear with the 44 you have, or a rear Dana 70($$$). The 9" you looked at, I believe is for a narrow track cj,what was the wms-wms?, 56 or 58 inches? Since your wanting to run the smaller tires 35-37" range I would prolly go with a 9" or 8.8 and a waggy 44 front. A built 9" should be able to hold up to 37s fine depending on driving style.

Since your wanting more of a Legal-streetable rig go with the smaller tires smaller drivetrain.(You'll will be surprised how far they will get you)

What bolt pattern is the 44 that you have?

Have fun with the metamorphism :D Hope this helps?
