I have a 73' CJ5
t15 transmission
dana20 transfer case
3.73 gears
33" Tires
I would like to slow it down some, seems to be geared pretty high.
Anybody have advice on what the best bang for my buck would be to do this?

gear the axels

If your gears are sufficient for the street and you only want lower trail gears I'd look into 4 to 1 for the case. Haven't priced a 20 but a 300 is cheaper than gearing axles.

Any idea what either of those options would cost, or where to look for the parts?
Are either a do it yourself job? I'm no great mechanic, but not terrible at following instructions.
I would also like to lock the rearend sometime, so would that make it less work if i did it when swapping out the gears?
Thanks for the replies.

There are really a LOT of options. Gears for a 20 are high $750 for a 3.15 to 1 kit. Hard to say if you could do it yourself, most people wouldn't. Axle gears are also high and if you want to run full carrier lockers then when doing gears is the best time. Having a shop put them in is also pricey.

thx for the info!
I was also looking @ the 'T18 with the low 1st gear' transmission swap as an option, but don't have any idea how difficult those are to find, or what all that changes in my drivetrain would be.
Ran a calculation @ http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html
It looks like in the low gear, it would double my transfer case low range from 22.72 to 47.85, without changing the ratio when in my highest gear.

sell it buy a samurai!

Funny you say that.
I have a buddy who used to be a jeep guy and recently purchased a samauri.
Their's seems to be a pretty exclusive club. He tried to get me to go out wheelin with him the other day.
Pretty sure he just wanted to try to get my unlocked rig stuck so he could brag about having to pull me out.

No I am sure he just wants to get your old jeep running. So it can hit the trails. No malice was intended. >:D >:D

Also do you really think a tiny little samurai could pull out a stuck CJ :104:
