Title: WHAT ARE THE BEST TIRES
Post by: 4wheelin on 10/30/07 - 04:27PM
I'M LOOKING TO GET SOME NEW TIRES WHEN I DO MY LIFT. I WAS LOOKING FOR SOME FEED BACK ON WHAT EVERYONE IS USING OR LIKES. I WILL BE DOING MOSTLY STREET DRIVING WITH WEEKEND OFF-ROAD TRIPS, BUT I ALSO WANT THEM TO LOOK GOOD. ANY INPUT WOULD HELP.

ALSO, ANYONE USED MICKEY THOMPSON'S BAJA CLAWS?

THANKS

I've heard good things about the Mickey Thompson MTZ's or ATZ.

I think so far the only size BFG has in the new MT is the 42" that were on the UA JK.

MTZ's are a good choice, look nice as well as last a long time.

The new KM2's like Keith stated look neat but no one I know has a set yet to figure wear etc.

Personally i'd avoid baja claws, they kinda suck in the rain and the sizes run small like a 35 is 33.5" tall (had 2 sets).

For the occasional weekend wheeler and mostly street I've heard nothing but good from Truxus MTs, a lot of Jeepers run them on DD that are over on the MWJT boards...they have good on-road charecteristics when compared to most MTs and also have siping in the treads for increased handling in snow and rainy conditions.  They perform well on the rocks, mud, dirt, and have been known as a solid all around tire, and the price is below that of the rather expensive BFGs and under other MTs...the only downside, if you want to call it that, is that the tread depth starts off a little smaller than most MTs, forget the exact measurements, but for the affordable price you should be able to get about 30,000 or so depending on driving habits, conditions, etc.In which most wheelers/drivers look elsewhere for a tire or want to upgrade, or try something different.

Personally, I have Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs and love the aggressive look, wet road handling in about par with other MTs, they are great on the trail but have trouble clearing out when very muddy, awesome on rocks...but in the midwest you will mostly be dealing with trails, some mud, etc...all of which the Truxus is suitable for.

There's my .02 cents, hope it helped some.

Out of the tires I have had...

GoodYear MT/R
Interco SSR's
BFG Krawlers

The BFG Krawlers are BY FAR the best. It really depends on what you want out of the tire. Low road noise seems to be a big concern to alot of people. I personally like the road noise. The crawlers are louder on the road than the MT/R's and SSR's but are better on the trails than both.

General concensus on the BFG Mud Terrains from people I wheel with are that they are awesome tires as well.

MT/Rs would be my choice.  Had 35s on the old XJ and the were great.

i have the trXus MTs and i love them. they are very quiet on the road and do very good offroad as well. they also have a very cool looking sidewall :101:

and the price is nice too. i got all 4 31s mounted and balanced at Buds Tire and Wheel for just over $600

I had my buddy check on the new 42" BFG MT's about 2-3 weeks ago, his cost was around $500 a piece.

Just some more input, I paid about $170 a piece 3 or so years ago for my 33" MT/Rs....also as far as road noise, my MT/Rs are pretty loud, and I rotate them every 3000 miles, they howl a little louder as they wear down.

I've heard the BFG MTs get great tread wear, decent on road-noise, but always been pricey...not that it's an issue, if price isnt an obstacle...which is what most jeepers wish for, then they are a great tire with the price.

My next set of tires will be 35s, not sure what I'm going to go with...possibly another set of MT/Rs or the newer BFGs.

I got my MT/Rs on ebay NEW for $720 shipped for 5.  Thats DIRT CHEAP.  They are around $190 each from tyres international for 35s.  Not too bad, i guess.

sorry to hi-jack, but im lookin at gettin some bigger rubber myself. what are LTBs like on the road? wheelin? im wanting 34x10.50
Title: Re: WHAT ARE THE BEST TIRES

LTB's wear like crap (7-10K) but they wheel great due to the soft compound they are made up of.

I had a set on a Toyota that made 7,000 and they were just enough left to run as spares.

I went from crappy 30" Remingtons to 33" BFG a/t, to 33" BFG MTs, to 35" Krawlers in the past 3 years.  Krawlers are BY FAR the best trail tire yet.  They're fairly tame on road, too, though (& I balance them with soft air pellets only).

Everyone on here is talking up the best TRAIL tires, but honestly, from what you said:

.....I WILL BE DOING MOSTLY STREET DRIVING WITH WEEKEND OFF-ROAD TRIPS.....

For the best bang for your buck ($130-$160 each & 30-40k life span) and great wet, rain, snow, dry pavement, with occasional weekend trips, it's very tough to beat the BFG All Terrain t/a.  I know I'm going to take crap for saying that, but if your DD is a part time trail rig, and you don't want to own 2 sets of tires, and you run kids to the school & yourself & your family to the store, work, etc. you know i am right.   Also, if national forests, etc.  are the extent of your trails, you'll be grateful for them to discuss the trip on the drive home.

I like how everyone says Krawlers that only come in 35+ and he wants 33s.

BFG makes a good all around tire in either AT or MT.

Because i finally broke over and got some Krawlers after shaking my gold tooth loose from trying some swamper on the street, LOL

That's awesome and MTR's are good tires. Re-reading through all this I kinda came off in my post that I didn't care for them or the SSR's, when in fact I did like both... I just like the Krawlers best of all of them, but mostly for wheeling. I probably would go with MTR's if I had no plans to wheel that much. I had 22,000 miles on the set I took off of my Jeep and they could have took another 10,000 easy. The SSR's I had I put 14,000 miles on... and maybe could have gotten another 8,000 out of them. My Krawlers right now have just over 8,000 on them and seem to be holding up okay. I expect to get 25,000 out of them.  Hope that helps anyone reading.  For long-life the Goodyear MTR's are gonna be the tire to get out the ones I've mentioned.

Goodyear MTR's are a good all round tire Jarod had a set on his jeep about 2.5 years then I ran them on my grand about 2 years more
they work good on the trails and street. plus we got about 40000 miles out of them.

Yep, MTR's are about the best Street/Trail/Rock tire you can get. Plus there not priced bad at all.

I've ran 33" & 35" Kumho Mud Terrains and 37" MTR's.  Both tires were excellent on the road and I got really good mileage out of both.  The MTR's were great in the rocks, although I didn't care for them in the mud.  The Kumho's were better in the mud (they're a mud tire) and they performed good off-road for the money.  I've got 36" Bias-Ply Irok's now and I like them as well.  Great tire for the money, excellent off-road, not too loud on the highway, but absolutely suck in the ice and the rain.  I plan on moving up to a bigger tire soon, and will either stay with the Irok's or go with the Krawler's since everyone loves I thought I would try 'em.

You should be happy with the M/Ts...anyways I had a question I thought I would pose, for around the 33" mud tire category, how many jeepers in the club are running the Interco Truxus MTs?  I ask this b/c they are by far, hands down, the most popular tire that jeepers over on MWJT run.  Also, the jeepers only running 33s for the most part use there Jeep also as a DD, and the Truxus have served as a great all around tire from reviews.

I've had a set, but on fullsize chevy.  Best snow and ice tire i've ever had but they didn't last.

yea the softer compound doesn't hold up as well on a full-size heavier vehicle than a Jeep, also the tread depth starts out a little smaller....BFGs and the harder compound rubber get good mileage on plenty of applications, whenever I get my truck, I'll be running BFG ATs most likely.

My $.02 ia you can't beat the BFG M/T's.  The new ones look awsome.

I have had 2 sets, and I love em both on and off road.  They ride great on the road, are quiet, and where well.  Off road, the gripe everything fantasticly.  Pay the money, and get quallity.

Brad what are your tires griping about?  Do they not like it when you run into all the trees or what?

I've had BFG AT's & MT's, Pro-Comp AT's & MT's, and Superswamper TSL Radials.

I liked the BFG AT's. It's a really good med/high composite tire, great for the road and dry off-road. They don't clean very well in the mud tho.

I really like the BFG MT's, and currently run them. They have the same med/high composite and clean really well for a streetable MT.

Pro-Comp AT's and MT's are a bit harder and don't clean as well. But they do make for a really streetable tire.

Superswamper TSL Radials are really good Off-raod tire. Infact their one of my fav's. The only setback is their price and "Supersoft" composite. Their not good for daily driving because of their mileage. Especially for those of us on a tight budget.

I've had a few friends run the Micky Baja Claws and they liked them alot. I've never heard anything bad about them. Another tire to look for is the Maxxis Buckshot. They kinda model the BFG MT but their alot cheaper. But for the weekend warrior, who needs good mielage durring the week and sick off-roading ability on the weekend. I'd say BFG MT's FTW!!!
