Depends on the dana 44. If you are speaking JK wise I would upgrade if planning on going above 37" tires.
I've built a lot of 60's over the years, and they are great but 40" tall tires are where the ground clearance become beneficial. Also depends on what upgrades you have done along the way since funds rarely allow us to go from dana 30/44 to dana 60 when going from a stock jeep. Normally it's done in phases and gears and lockers come along a bit at a time.
