Should I buy this?
« on: 05/27/09 - 03:02AM »
There's a hp dana 60 kingpin axle housing on ebay that I'm thinking about bidding on;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-5-1979-Ford-Dana-60-king-pin-front-axle-housing_W0QQitemZ230345102480QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item35a1a35490&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A1171|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

I'm planning to go to 42" tires (someday) and I'd like to have this axle.  Considering how hard they are to find I think I should get it even if I won't be using it for awhile.

What do you think it's worth?  Shipping will be $150.

That would be the MAX it would be worth, not even sure if it would be worth shipping above that.  Downside of that housing is A. no hubs, bearings, brakes, spindles, etc.  B. It's been stripped so when setting up gears your starting from scratch (not huge thing but PIA), and C. Being your doing a TJ the 78/79 front end isn't as crucial as it is for a YJ.

Thanks for the advice Aaron.  I'd probably have to replace the gears anyway, but to have to replace the gears, inner and outer axles, u-joints, bearings, cover and getting a locker and brakes will get expensive.

U joints, gears, locker, and even a little brake work is common for 60 swaps.

However with that housing your looking at kingpin rebuilds (no cap), PIA gear install since no starting reference on shims, hubs, all new bearings, races, etc.

The shafts aren't a big deal really other than they are nice to have as spares or run until you break.  For 42's most are going to run alloys at the very least 35 spline alloy stubs.
