Starting and reving to 3-4 Grand on its own?

Some times my engine will start up fine, others times it will rev up to 3 or 4 rpms and set there for a while so i shut it off. Any ideas what it could be?

What kind of motor?

Check for vacuum leaks first... also post up any codes that it's giving out.

there's an idle speed controller that works off of vacuum, but it could be that piece itself.
