4.0 vs 5.3
« on: 02/ 4/10 - 04:56PM »
2003 4.0 out of a TJ 30,xxx miles, it's free from a good friend of mine (Codeman96), complete except for computer. It spun a bearing, so I'm going to rebuild it, beef it up a bit, might even stroke it (researching that now), Nothing wrong with the motor in the Jeep now; but this will allow me to build something better and still drive the Jeep; then I'll sell the 4.0 that comes out of it on the cheap. I thought of going with a 5.3 but that's a crazy expensive mod start to finish and I'm not dumping that kind of money into the Jeep for no more of a gain that it would give. The 4.0 has plenty of torque.

5.3 are dirt cheap and a dime a dozen so easy to get parts for....and you would get huge gains for the money  8).

There is nothing "dirt cheap" about a 5.3 swap.  The stock AX15 won't take it even if you do adapt it, wiring harness, fuel pump, exhaust, all of it adds up to $.

Plus after wheeling with Derek in his YJ he was never short on power for wheeling, and smoked several V8 jeeps drag racing.

I know nothing of building engines, but from what I've read you can get pistons that allow you to use the 4.0 rods.  I think they are more money though.  Still need the 4.2 crank.

I'm not the end all for knowledge and I still learn everyday.  But I have done V8 swaps and know that the big parts aren't bad... it's all the $50-$100 stuff you forget about that blows the budget.

just parts including the motor no labor i have 420 horse power 5.3 at fly wheel in my yj...1400 dollars

now of course i paid for it to be done...cause wrenching is not my thing...since jimmy is wrenching and doing fab work now i thought he might like to know it might not be as price e as he thinks considering 180 to 190 horsepower vs 420, to me that is a huge gain. you will spend 1400 or more to stroke and end up with a highly mod motor that does not like to be on its back plus the bottom end of stroked motors are know to go ( so i am told ) and all i have done to my V8 is computer work, exhaust and air flow system just like you would still have to do on a 6. Plus there is no substitution for the deep rumble of a CHEVY V8  8)

:21: Your right, I love the sound of a V8,  but that sound is not worth $3000 to me, nor is the HP gain, that's the minimum amount of money it would take to put a 5.3 in my Jeep, me doing the work. Motor, computer, and harness would be $1500+ by itself. All I have to do with the 4.0 is put it on an engine stand, rebuild it however I decide to do it, and put it in the Jeep. I don't need anything else. The jeep will go anywhere I want it to, and my flames will make my Jeep look just as cool as one sounds with a v8!  >:D

Seriously... This is how I looked at it.

5.3 - $$$$$$$$$$$x2
1. the engine
2. computer
3. wiring harness
4. radiator and electric fan
5. alternator
6. exhaust work
7. motor mounts
8. transmission or adapter to what I have
9. multiple nickel and dime items

4.0 - $$$
1. Free Motor - complete w/everything, except computer
2. Rebuild kit
3. Maybe stroker parts.
4. bolt in application.

It's a clear choice for me!

However, If anyone wants to sponsor a 5.3 in my Jeep I am accepting sponsors at this time.

As a sponsor you get:
1. placement of two(2) stickers on my Jeep; where I say and must pass my approval.
2. one year of me telling everyone how great you are.
3. 2 photo shoots
4. I will give your girlfriend, wife, or of age sister a ride. I only have 2 seats, sorry.  8)
5. my autograph

But they just tuck up in there oh so nice. Sorry for the crappy cell pic.

You can get a 5.3, all accessories, harness, computer, starter etc with low miles for 750

Seriously... This is how I looked at it.

5.3 - $$$$$$$$$$$x2
1. the engine
2. computer comes with motor, but will need a flash
3. wiring harnessComes with motor, you can modify the harness yourself
4. radiator and electric fan
5. alternator comes with motor
6. exhaust work
7. motor mounts build your own
8. transmission or adapter to what I have ax 15 prolly wont hold up long, and the adapter is around 500-600. run a turbo 400-350-700r4 and it pretty much just bolts up
9. multiple nickel and dime items ALOT of dough

But to each its own, its what ever you like and wanna run.
