Ross, can you split the 5.3 vs 4.0 stuff out of my thread. Would be a nice discussion to have, in it's own thread.

Alright, well I'm a man of my word. Alex text me and mentioned Stutzmans; just got off the phone with them, they said @ $780 for 2000-2003 5.3 w/everything, guaranteed to run. He definitely sounded like he could be talked down a few bucks. Guess I should have done my own homework instead of taking a few peoples word for it.

MMMM, Delicious.

I'm gonna rethink this 5.3 mod; I may be able to pull it off $$ wise.

i bought my 5.3 for 500 bucks 100 percent complete off ebat for 500 bucks, cost me 50 bucks to ship it here out of massachusetts....(I CAN HELP YOU CONSIDERABLY ON SHIPPING SINCE IT WHAT I DO)...paid 300 for a wire harness, and 800 to have the motor, tranny, transfer installed and running in my jeep...thre a radiator exahaust and little odds and ends on it and i was good to go...i didnt buy cheap stuff and i was at like a little over 3'gs....

after machine work and parts on the 4.0 to stroke and bore it you could have a complete 5.3 ready to run, i LOVE my 5.3 and just wish i had a 6.0 now that its done, put a 700r4 behind it and couldnt be happier with it....

Yeah I think I could do the 5.3 for the same amount of money as stroking
the 4.0 since Alex schooled me on price. In still tossing it all around. Gonna Make a decision in the next few weeks but am still
going next weekend to pick up the 4.0

Well the cost would prolly be in the 5 to 10 grand range and might not make for a very reliable engine. a 5.3 would be cheaper for sure. Hesco parts aren't cheap.

Here is whats needed for a 5.0 stroker.

4.9L high-buck stroker

Custom billet 4.06" stroker crank
Eagle forged 6.15" rods
Custom forged +0.060" bore pistons, 17cc dish, 1.275" compression height
11.0:1 CR
505 Performance 273/273-14HR hydraulic roller camshaft
Hesco aluminium cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.043" quench height
Flometrics F&B 68mm billet TB
3.0" exhaust system
Custom PCM programming
328hp @ 5200rpm, 379lbft @ 3900rpm

5.0L very high-buck stroker

Same as above except:

Block resleeved to 4.00" bore diameter
Custom forged 4.00" bore pistons, 16cc dish, 1.275" compression height
11.5:1 CR
505 Performance 281/281-14HR hydraulic roller camshaft
344hp @ 5300rpm, 384lbft @ 4000rpm

I believe HESCO is about the highest place to buy stroker parts.  You could probably do it cheaper if you shopped around.

There are plenty arguements on both sides... if you do the work your self and want a stoker, the fellow who runs the O'Reilly's Machine shop has a stroked Wrangler and knows the deal and will do a good job for you.  It's a lot simpler and great for your size rig.

If you decide to dump your 4.0's, let me know!  I love 'em!  j2sax@yahoo.com!

If you go for the Big V8, you will need to do some beefing up of your driveline!

Have a great week

Like Jesse said there are arguments on both sides, just like the tubing debate, the tow rig debate, the tire debate... blah blah.

My minds made up and I/(me) have come to the conclusion that a V8 in a "trail jeep" is just a novelty mod for those who have money to blow; or parts laying around to use. In a racing configuration I can totally understand having a 5.3 or any V8. The ONLY thing all that extra HP is going to help with is sounding great, going faster and breaking stuff. :P

This 4.0 I'm rebuilding is a 2004 model, I'm not going to stroke it, but will do a CAI, Throttle body spacer, zero cat, and flowmaster 40. The 4.0 is proven, and has MORE trail miles attributed to it than any 5.3 ever will. It'll go EVERYWHERE a similar Jeep with a 5.3 in it will go and I don't feel like I'm settling at all.

I repectfully remove myself from the debate and take my place as a thread spectator.

So I can have the updated HO and I just enjoy rebuilding motors.. haven't done it for a while, this motor was free. It's more of a therapy mod than anything. There is nothing wrong with the current motor and I'll sell it when I pull it.

Where's the "Like" button?
I only went for a V8 in the '5 because my old 258 had a crack in the block and the 304 was cheap (thanks Brad) and I wanted to swap again anyway. The V8 sounded good and I liked it, but for a trail Jeep I don't think it's needed either.
I'd put something funny here, but you probably wouldn't get it anyway...

Jimmy, why waste your money on those useless bolt-ons? Its been proven over and over that the CAI and TB spacer do nothing on jeeps. The factory unit filters and performs better than all those bolt on tubes. Save that money for a header and upgraded ignition.
