I dont' think it is.  If your going through all the trouble of building a new cage you mine as well do one that will last.  .120 wall.

I've always looked at it like this:  You can have a cage that will last 1 roll or a cage that will take multiple roll overs.

.083 is too thin.  On all the rockers that I have built I use 1 3/4 x .093 and if you look at the dents that end up in it - you wouldn't want it to protect your noggin.  Especially in an open top vehicle.  Barrett is right - .120 wall minimum in an open top vehicle.  There is a reason that .120 wall DOM is a mandated material for almost all sanctioning bodies in off road competitions.  The most protection without adding too much weight.
I cut sheetmetal for free.  It's fixing it that get's expensive.

It is, but I think it will actually break before the DOM or other tube because it is more brittle.  And I think the trend is more to DOM and REW tubing than the chromoly.  I would check this out and not take what I said as gospel truth. ha-ha

well the chrome moly has different steps you have to take, depends on if it is normalized or non.

i persoanlly like HREW over dom. thats a personal thing.

but the .120 wall is the minimum i would use. period, no questions asked.
