Title: Project Ruby Lee 2
Post by: LoneWolf on 08/ 9/09 - 09:51PM
Most everyone knows by now that Aaron and I have swapped Jeeps. This thread will be the continuation of the YJ since I now have it in custody.

So far I have added some waggy springs to the rear; which added 2 inches to my wheelbase... I took it out for a shakedown run this weekend at SMORR.

First of all I'd like to say Aaron put together a set of axles and did a great job on the spring-over, this jeep flexes great! I was hoping not to rub too much but as you can see from these pics I did. So I'll be doing some fender trimming this week and will post up pics after I am done.

the fender got pushed out pretty good.

Second, this baby was in bad need of some ... Rocker Guards

Always wanted to make a set myself, so I decided to give it a try. I called up Ozark Mountain Steel and ordered a 10' long piece of 12" wide 3/16; I had them form it into 6x6 angle with a press brake. If your going to build rockers; you don't want to use regular angle; unless you don't care about them fitting snug.

I fitted the steel up against the Jeep and marked my cut for the front. This pic is after I did that but you get the jest.

I marked the front inside and out
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/13014-3/yjrockers_marked.jpg)

Ready to cut
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/13017-3/yjrockers_readytocut.jpg)

The front after cutting; turned out pretty good
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/13020-3/yjrockers_frontpassenger.jpg)

The rear was a little off; so I marked it and ground it down to match the curve.

After grinding it down
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/13026-3/yjrockers_rearpassenger.jpg)

With the front and back all matched up and looking good, I secured the rocker with clamps and a hi-lift and marked my outside holes.

Outer hardware loosely installed, so that I could drill down through the tub and mark the bottom for the 3 center studs wrapped with 1' pipe that would support the bottom.

I cut the front and rear mounting brackets out of the left over material from trimming to fit; I then welded them to the main piece.

Here is a shot of the rear mount... rockers are already done, got ahead of myself and forgot to take pictures.

The front mount, the tubefender is a little crooked, but I'll fix that at a later time.

The view from underneath. There are 1/2 studs that I tack welded to the upperside, which are wrapped with 1" pipe for spacers; this kept the bottom nice and smooth and ready for sliding on the rocks if needed.

2 of the studs (3 total) from the top; still need to trim them down
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/13047-3/yjrockers_tubmounts.jpg)

Black primered and ready for first coat of paint. You can see a couple of the spacers that I cut to put around the bottom studs.

Side shot of the finished (for now) rockers.

I plan to add side steps on also; just didn't have time and want to at least get to this point with them before the shakedown run. All in all; I'm PROUD of how good these rockers turned out, this has been my first little fab project and I'm now stoked to do something else.  stay tuned.

COST:
Steel $72
Hardware $40

so what springs did aaron use when he did the spring over?  im going to be doing the spring over in my cj within the next couple months and would like to be able to fit 39.5's on it also.....did you put the waggy springs in the front?  my plan is to use xj springs in the rear to

I don't know what brand/type of springs he originally used. I put waggy springs on the rear; which gave me 2inches of additional wheelbase.

Tonight I got the fenders trimmed up and replaced a power steering pump that went out on the shakedown run (thanks for the pump Aaron)

Plenty of room for flex now and for setting the rear back another inch or two.

Tomorrow night I'm going to start chopping up the cage and reworking it, plus will be adding seat&harness bars. Will post pics of that as I make progress.

you should look into XJ springs in the rear....they should give it about 6 inches of stretch, which is what i plan on doing....you have to move the shakle hangers back to the out side of the rear bumper but its an easy to do

I also noticed you dont have a rear seat...if you want one i have one for sale...its black with laredo stripes but you can cover or vinly die it....its in wicked good shape
Title: Re: YJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: YJ_Aaron on 08/12/09 - 12:51AM
There is a rear seat.

The point of the waggys' is they fit in the stock hangar locations.  The SOA in front is stock YJ springs which is what was in the rear.

With the XJ you have to do a genright tank or a fuel cell also.

I want to keep my hangers on the frame... and only need 4 more inches to get to 100" wheelbase... don't want anything longer than that.

Thanks Caleb! I still need to grind down a couple spots... but it's real close.

Was doing some cutting tonight on the roll cage and had a cutoff wheel disintegrate on me... got me good...

I took 3 deep tissue stitches and 7 topside stitches to close it up... and if that wasn't bad enough I had to get a tetnus shot on top of it all.

Due to the graphic nature of these images, I used thumbnails. click to enlarge. :P

Got the old cage ready to come out; and am starting on getting the floor all cleaned up and ready to Herculine.

I've decided to scrap the old cage, which is built off of the stock B-pillar and rear side hoops, and design a full DOM cage; and with the help of a couple friends it'll be a reality real soon. It'll be stronger and stand up better, I believe, to the weight of the D60's and larger tires... Lord forbid, should I roll again.

Lake Steel in Camdenton; WELL worth the drive. $2.78/ft 1.75x.120 DOM; I got 4 - 22ft 6in sticks; my friends helping are in Lebanon, so that's just a short throw from there. Regardless, I'll buy from Lake Steel before paying for it in Springfield again.  :deadhorse:

Heading there tomorrow; if anyone wants any, better get it ordered & paid for and tell them I'll be picking it up. Gonna cost me about $30 in diesel round trip and I ain't opposed to taking money to help with that.  Let me know how much (bunch) your talking about first. 631-3937

FYI: I'll be there picking mine up around 1:00p or so...

Well I had planned on Herculining the floor of the YJ this week, but ran into a couple snags; that will need to be addressed before I go forward with the Herc.

Rusty Floor at the drivers side B-pillar... gotta replace this first.

More rusty floor at the drivers side front.

HOWEVER... I was able to get started on the cage this weekend. We started with the B-Pillar, will be working our way to the front and then the back. Concepted and drew up the design in AutoCad and BendTech Pro. This is where we are at with it right now. The entire cage will be 1.75x.120 DOM.

Had hard time getting a couple of the b-pillar bolts out.. resorted to a proven method of extraction.

All stripped down.. Look familiar? Really need to get the waggy springs on the front too.. sitting a little low in the front; but doesn't rub anywhere.

b-pillar plate from Blue Torch Fab with my new b-pillar tacked in. Just using some soft bolts for now; will upgrade hardware upon final install.

Here are some other pics with the driver and passenger A-pillars bent and tacked in.

thought I would come back and post some progress to the cage... I didn't take too many picture this last Saturday, so instead I'll post some JPG's from the Bend-Tech assembly file. It's coming along nicely.

Not bad man, are you going to be able to see as low as that seat is sitting?
Title: Re: YJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 09/ 9/09 - 02:07PM
It looks low, but really it isn't... same height as the stock seat. I think it's the low-back of the Corbeau's that make it look like that.
Title: Re: YJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: YJ_Aaron on 09/ 9/09 - 02:13PM
Could be, maybe an optical illusion.  Just looks like the top of the headrest is equal with the steering wheel.
Title: Re: YJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 09/ 9/09 - 02:42PM
The steering wheel is all the way up which is why it looks that way(tilt steering) and it is pretty close to the top of the seat... however, my eye level is quite a bit higher than the top of the seat. These seats are not as tall as stock YJ seats.

Nice welding there Jimmy!  8)

Thank Caleb. Still no professional; But I'm getting better and am pleased with how this is turning out.

Title: Re: YJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 09/ 9/09 - 03:59PM
Yeah, but not everyone reading the thread knows it has tilt steering.  :P  I'm just saying the Corbeau's have an extremely low back, and the tilt steering is raised all the way up. I know that you know that I know you know it has tilt steering.

Windshield profile -- couldn't have lined up any better.

Can't wait to paint the ugly a$$ tan dash to black until I gut it out.

The harness bar is lined up correctly behind the seat. Also have plenty of room behind the seats for adding seat sliders later... right now it's made to fit me!

Just finished putting in the bhoop X.

The bhoop X w/gussets from BTF added. Pay no attention to the sad little tacks (they'll hold till I get back at it with a real welder).. Due to time constraints... I had to do this part at home with my itty bitty hobby welder! LOL

Thanks guys, it's been alot of work. I figure I was pretty fortunate when I rolled the Rubicon with it's stock cage, i really think the full doors help immensly, Since I'm not gonna have doors anymore... don't want to take any chances next time around.  8)

The center of the bar is about an inch below the seat slots... so pretty much right inline. Can't be subjecting myself to spinal compression by mounting it too low... I got enough back problems already!

I plan on building a custom dash/console kinda like what Brandon had done in Juggy.. which will fix that hole in the floor board. I got the idea in my head... will probably mock it up on the cheap with cardboard first.  :P

yes the front hubs stick out about 2 inches past the wheel. The rear does not... It's flush.

im thinking i might buy drive flanges instead of the lockouts....they seem to be alot tougher just in case they do get banged up on the rocks...have you thought about changing them out at all?? or are you not to worried about it???

Drive flanges are much stronger than locking hubs.

If you're going to upgrade to 35 spline outers then I would do flanges instead of spending $300 on a pair of lockouts.

RockCrusher was offering great prices on them on Pirate.

I'm not worried about it right now. I've got too many other irons in the fire. Though, I'm sure I'll worry about it later.  ::)

I've been busy working on some new tube fenders and hoop. I wanted to build something that would follow the hood, so that's what I set out to do. I used 1.75DOM and then some 3/16" smooth plate on the outside. (cutting out the pieces with a sawzall is not my idea of fun) I'll skin the inside with 1/8" smooth plate. I wanted to tie into the hoop but also wanted to be able to remove the fenders without cutting so I took a piece of 1.5DOM and welded to the hoop for the hood bar to slip over. This enables me to remove the fenders by first removing the winch plate. I'll get some more pics this week. The fenders are done, save for adding some putty and smoothing it all out real nice like. I also still need to skin the inside (fender wells).... and plan to come up with some sort of removable flare made from Kydex or something similar. I got the idea in my head.  :P

I don't happen to have a press brake, so this is my way of bending flats. Works great on small stuff!

The front hoop bent and cut ready to weld on. Alignment looks great.

Driver side installed and hooked to the hoop. I'll drill holes and either use a tractor pin or bolt to secure the hood bar to the hoop.

Passenger side installed. Front hoop is tilted a smidgen forward because I don't have the front bumper on. The tabs from the bumper/stinger I do next will put it back to plum.

You can notice in this pic I sloped the hood down quite a bit. I really like how it turned out.

more to come...

So just out of curosity - Did you trim the bottom of the back part of the hood so that it wouldnt hit the cowl when it is in down position? What did you do with the grill, cut it? lower it? It is progressing nicely I dig!

No trimming on the hood... I trimmed off each side of the grill. I had to cut more off of the drivers side to clear the steering box. It's all hidden can't see it unless you stick your head down there and look for it. I also lowered the body mount for the hood about 2". The YJ's hood body mount is higher than the CJ.

Unless you need it for strength, 1/8" for the inner fender will make them heavy and may not be necessary.  I would go with some along the lines of 16ga, my opinion.
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 10/13/09 - 03:25PM
The inside skins will serve no purpose but to mount a few things to and keep mud out of the engine compartment. I figured anything less than 1/8 would be too flimsy... for some of the things I am wanting to mount...as far as extra weight, it might equate to 10lbs. tops. I'll check it out though. thanks.

Not trying to get off topic but curious as to what welder you have? Do you burn flux core?

I just ordered a new Hobart Handler 187 mig, and last week I bought a Lincoln plasma pro cut 25(awesome). Thing to keep in mind on the plasma is that they take a fair amount of constant air pressure(mine wants a constant 65lbs) to work properly. The one I bought can be plugged into a 110 or 220 and it will reset itself accordingly - with that said I have been running it off of a 110v 20amp circuit hooked to my 8 gallon air compressor(to small) and I can cut 1/4" like butter, but only for about 20"-30" then I have to let the air compressor catch back up other wise it wont blow all the way thru. In any case I don't think a guy is any better off with 50 gallons of storage, I think it is way more important to have plenty of HP to compress the air faster. Anyways just thought I would chime in.

I run my plasma (Hypotherm) off of a 6 horse 2 stage and it will cut forever.  Just watch craigslist and find a deal.  I used to do the "wait for the compressor" and it was less than fun.

I have the Millermatic 180 and am using solid wire (.035) now that I have a welder that will accept gas.  ... When I get the plasma I plan to use a tank of compressed air, since it doesn't require a dryer/filter. Not sure my current compressor would be good enough...  It's just a 26 gallon Craftsman 1.6HP 165psi.. bla bla. and I don;t want to spend $1000 on a compressor just to run plasma.

well currently I've finished out the parts of the fenders I can... and have the fenders ready for the inner skins, checked out some 16guage and it's to thin for what I want, and 1/8 is a little to thick, so I'm going to go with 14guage. Will pick that up tomorrow from Wheelers.

Not a chance. Takes too much time; I'd have to charge you 1 million dollars.

Any updates Jimmy?  8)

I picked up the 14 gauge for the inner skins last week; the drivers side is all welded up; fits perfectly, I applied a little Bondo last night for a nice clean finished look, will sand and primer it tonight; and snap some pics. Here are the only pics I have right now:

I used cardboard, and poster board to get my templates; marked out and cut them with my jigsaw and a good bi-metal blade. I had a little trouble with the center area and being able to get the fender on without a lot of finagling; so I reworked that area, so it was easier to put the fender on and vise-versa. I just cut it out a bit more. You really have to pay attention to how your building something so that it will actually fit where you want it without having to take a hammer to it.

All finish welding on this one
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/14832-3/IMG_0276.jpg)

In the process of smoothing/grinding out the corners; I welded inside and out... not really necessary but practice makes perfect. soon as I get this one primered up I'll take some more/better pics of it before and after I mount it up. The iPhone's camera leaves a lot to be desired.

LOL And yes Aaron I'm glad to be sharpening skills, been enjoying every bit of this work. Except cutting the 3/16 outer panels with a sawzall (didn't have any metal blades for my jigsaw and was too lazy to go buy any)  ::) .. I could do without doing that EVER again. It's hard to cut a straight line with one of them... and ear plugs makes grinding a lot easier to endure when you have a lot to do.  :P

well I had plans to come to the meeting Thursday night, but got sidetracked. Did this Thursday night, painted it up last night.

Welding on the floor is a real drag.. the drivers side fender I welded entirely on the floor, I have the passenger side all tacked up and ready to weld; but was not looking forward to doing it on the floor, so I took a little detour.

I cut my frame top and bottom frame pieces (1x1x1/8) and legs (1.25x1.25x1/8); I also mitered them at 45degrees
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/14903-3/D1236.jpg)

marked out my top and bottom shelf on some 3/16" I have; then cut out with my orbital saw (wish I had a plasma the whole time)

added wheels to the bottom, painted everything but the top.

Can't take credit for the design of this table I found a PDF online that I went by. Only thing I did different was I used 3/16 instead of 1/8 for my shelves... Its what I had laying around. Also I place the mig gun holder below the tabletop's horizon so it wasn't in the way when I'm moving parts around on the table top.

I've attached the PDF to this post if anyone wants it. Nice table, not too big, not too small. I'll probably make up a basket of some sort to add to the bottom shelve for smaller accessories.

I've had it out 3 times since we traded. No pics. Used to take pictures like crazy back in the day, but just don't bother to do it anymore. I guess I need to. This jeep does good, just a little hi-geared right now for rock crawling. I have 4.88s going in it; just haven;t got there yet. Right now I'm in the process of painting it with a Ford color called Shadow Grey Metallic. I can then clear coat it so that I could take it out some, or start taping out my flames. I think I'll wait till the flames are done, since that helps you to wheel better and makes you look damn good doing it. :P I also need to replace the front leafs, the passenger shock, finish building my dual-battery tray, paint or powder coat the wheels, pull cage and fix rust in floor, herculine the floor, tie front of cage to frame, repaint cage with shadow grey color and then I think I'll start taking it out. Here a few pics... it's all I got right now.

Fenders and tailgate painted and ready for clear coat.

Not bad man.  What color will you outline flames?  That jeep really was almost a charcoal grey when Larry and I were talking about it before.  I like the color you chose.

I'm the same way this time around with pics.  Jeeps been out twice and not a single pic.  Haven't even taken the camera.
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 11/25/09 - 01:19PM
The flames will be a Ford color as well, called Ebony. Black obviously. I'm going to wait to see what it looks like with no outlines so I'm not sure, but I'm thinking if I did outline them that a silver color would look good or maybe a color somewhere in between the black and grey too would look nice and keep it subtle. I'll cross that bridge after the flames are done.

I been doing a lot to the Jeep; just haven't kept up with the thread. I had to stop on the paint, otherwise I would have to do more painting later. I'd rather just do it right now and then finish the paint and be done with it. So... I do have the base coat on but it is not cleared yet, so it's not a shiny as it will be.

kind of where it is at right now. The fenders are not tighten or aligned up just slapped on there. It's  the only pic I have.

I've blacked out the wheels. Not really sure how the paint on these will last once I start wheeling it. Guess I'll find out.

Right now the jeep is all tore apart as I am fixing the tub from rust and getting ready to Herculine it.

Cage is out and just taking up space right now.

These are the pics of the bad floor than needs replaced before I can herculine.
Rusty Floor at the drivers side B-pillar...

More rusty floor at the drivers side front.

I chopped and cut and cut and chopped. ALL RUST ERADICATED.  :17: Pretty sure I got it all.

I had to cut out the mounting brackets for the floor part of the bpillar cage foot. I tried to drill them out but it was just rusted too badly.

I then made some new brackets to weld in out of some 1/4" I had laying around.

I cut and bent several pieces to match the the flow of the floor and whatnot as best as I could. The rest of these pics are just different shots of what all I had to replace. I sealed everything top and bottom with anti-rust sealant and am using seam sealer on the underneath. Will post pics of that up after I get it done.

I also had to replace a lot of the side panel; because it was rusting out.. paint was bubbling up underneath.  I cut it out and replaced it, i replaced the rusted metal and am not too worried about sanding smooth for paint since it's getting covered with 3/16 plate after the tub is herculined.

Everything is welded solid on the inside, sealed with anti-rust sealer, will be primed, sanded, and then herculined. Underneath is sealed with the anti-rust sealer and will be sealed on top of that with automotive seam sealer, then primed and painted. I still have to grind down some boogery welds and fill in where the cage mounts are at. Hopefully this will be the last of the rust for many years. I did not overlap any of the new metal I put in; it is cut to size and made to fit... save for the long piece running along the threshold. It's going to be covered by my rocker so I didn't worry too much about it.

Tub is herculined. Turned out nice.. hard to tell from pics though.

Also started on my corners.
I cut everything out with my hand held orbital saw and and angle grinder w/cutoff wheels. A plasma would have been VERY handy and saved me some time and grinding... you do what you can with what you got. For hardware, I plan to counter sink black allen heads.

I angle the joints at 45deg so the weld puddle has a place to go. I have no way to bend a radius so I cut a section of 1.75dom tubing out and welding it in with the 3/16 plate. It's a little thinner but not enough to really matter.

Here's one side welded and ground. I welded a bit, let it cool, then weld some more to keep it from warping, instead of just welding one long pass.

I couldn't cut that dang tail light out smooth and straight to save my life with my orbital and I don't know anyone who can cut a straight line with a cut off wheel. So I had to figure something else out to make them look good. I opened it up a bit more and tacked in a strip of 14 gauge then ground it down flush. I'll fill in any gaps with some filler and sand smooth.

I'm going bend up the flares this weekend out of 1.5dom, skin them with 14guage, hope to finish this one (drivers side) next week and move on the passenger side.

Use A guide plate
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 01/20/10 - 12:42AM
still wouldn't be good enough and would take longer to make the guide plate straight and smooth than doing what I did. I considered it.

Does orbital saw = jig saw?

I probably would have drawn the lines for the tail light and cut just inside the lines.  Then used a flap wheel or a fiber disc to take the cut down to the line.  That way you can take a little material off here and there and keep checking your work.  Just my opinion.
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 01/20/10 - 11:56AM
yes handheld jigsaw. I DO value your opinions, but I have to work with the tools I have. Of course I drew out the taillight first, is there another way? I could not cut the radius straight and smooth on the 3/16 plate with the jigsaw it's just too thick and too small a radius. To make a guide plate would have been easier than cutting out the pattern without one obviously, but still I would have had to cut it as close as I could and then grind it down to be smooth and straight all the way around. The opening after I cut it was not big enough to fit my 4 1/2" angle grinder into and grind down smooth. I was able to do so to the lengths, but for the radius I could not get the angle grinder to fit in there to do so. I have no flap disc and I have no other tool or attachment to get in there other than a hand file and I'm not going to do that. So I did what I had to do with what I had available because I'm not in the position to go buy any new tools right now and when you're in the middle of working on something, it sucks to have to leave and go buy stuff and sometimes you can't when it 12:30 at night, so I come up with a solution that in my opinion is better than free-handing a cut, is just as durable, took less time and looks cleaner and saved me from having to buy something. Isn't that what it's all about? Doing what you can, with what you got? This is what worked for me, how boring it would be to read everyone's build thread if we all did everything the same.
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LibertyPatriot on 01/20/10 - 12:08PM
Don't know what the radius was, but if you had a hole saw the same that would have made it easy.  I bought a couple kits from Harbour Freight with several different sizes and they don't cut worth sh!t so you would have had to buy or had some good quality saws anyway= $$$.  Then you could have cut the inside out with a cutoff wheel.  Although I see you can't cut straight with one, so nevermind.  >:D  A straight edge clamped on with your orbital saw would have worked then though.

Everyone gets there in a different way.  Diversity is great!  Otherwise we'd all be Obamas...  :o

I understand working with what you have, I'm in that same boat.
If you can swing the cash to get some fiber discs and/or flap wheels for the grinder do it.  I like them way more than a regular wheel, plus you can get a better finish on the welds you're grinding down.

I know you have a Dremel, if you really wanted to get in the radius that would have got it done, but you'd probably still be finishing it then. >:D

Dude I think it looks like you did a hell of a job - I have been wanting to buy a dremel for grinding in small spaces like that! I am starting to think they are a must own - you can get cut off wheels to go on them, grinding wheels, etc. pretty sweet little rigs!

I'll do that for sure Austin when I can... My dremel works great for about 2 minutes, then takes hours to charge back up. I bought the Lithium powered one so it is useless on anything like this. If I were to buy another and someday I probably will...  I'll would get the 110 version.

I used Ford color CX (Dark Shadow Grey Metallic) and the black flames will also be a Ford color (AU) called Ebony. Yes did and doing it all myself. I have an HVLP gun that works great with my compressor.

Here is a pic of the tailgate, painted and clear coated. I also have all the hinges done.

I'm not knocking your work or choice, but when you have that much tire sticking out are the short steel flares gonna do any good?  Or is it just a completed look for front and rear you were going for?
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: gdowling on 01/25/10 - 03:32PM
IMO - even tho there is still tire sticking out from under those flares they will still keep the whole side of jeep having mud thrown all over it, it should keep most of the mud coming off the tires approx. 4" (or however wide they are) away from the body . I say sweet idea, and a sweet look.
Title: Re: CJ Dovetail... continued.
Post by: LoneWolf on 01/25/10 - 04:28PM
They are 3". Of course they'll do good, they'll protect the side of the Jeep if I should get wedged up against any kind of obstacle on the trail and protect the paint from rocks kicked up by the tires on and off road. They'll also help to keep mud/water out of the tub... Without them it's basically a straight shot for it to fly in, which is what happened the few times I've had it out. Especially in the front; I'll be adding 3" flares to the front fenders I built also. I need to finish these rear corners/flares, add the steps to my rockers (bent them up this weekend), and then the front flares. I can then paint everything, including the flames, and start focusing on the suspension or the console and dash I going to build, which ever I decided to tackle first.

Thanks Jesse, I am by no means a trained paint man in the sense you're talking about, but I will say I've screwed up a few times and learned from that. haha. Everything I've needed to know I've learned by talking to people who have done it, like Crazy Larry, I've learned a lot from him. It's really not that difficult to paint, it's the prep that takes so much time and determines what the final outcome will be like; and if you don't do it right and take certain precautions then it'll turn out like crap. You definitely have to have the surface clean before you start spraying. I don't have any expensive painting equipment. I have a $350 Craftsman compressor and a $60 HVLP paint and detail gun from Harbor Freight. This equipment wouldn't work well at all for painting a huge surface like a tractor trailer, but for my little Jeep panels and hood, it's more than enough to get the job done... and the most important thing I have learned about painting is that you can't rush it... Let it dry and then let it dry again... haha. before you go getting all happy about it or else you'll screw it up. As far as the flames go, I learned how to do that from Jason Harris who painted my Rubicon. This is the first time I have ever painted a vehicle in this manner (spray bombed many), so I'm going to hope for the best and if it don't turn out the way I want it to, then I'll sand it down and try again until I get it how I want it. I think I'll be fine and it's going to turn out sweet the first time.

If I only had no life and 8+ hours a day to work on it; It would be done in no time flat. But with 30 minutes here and a couple hours there... it takes time that's for sure. I'd really like to get the corners done and have it painted by the BiG Meat run in March, but I don't know it's coming up quick, and this weekend I can't work on it and next weekend I have to go to Poplar Bluff to pick up a motor for it.

I've finished the other corner, counter sunk all the hardware on both corners, fixed the gap where the tailgate is (was crooked on the right side of the dovetail), sanded it all down to bare metal. I also added sidesteps to my rockers and will counter sunk the outer hardware on them.  It'll be ready for paint by next weekend.  I've been sidetracked on a minibaja bike that I got... painting it right now with the same scheme the Jeep will be. No pics, but will try to get some up soon.

Here's some pics of the my rockers that I came back to and added steps. I used 3/16" and 1.5 DOM... I still have to countersink the new hardware I have. Also I angle the side bar up, because I think it looks a lot better that way. IMHO.

Got sidetracked...

I've been sidetracked with a little Baja Bike I picked up. It had some issues running that turned out the be a faulty kill switch. With the Jeep being so close to paint; I wanted to try my hand out at painting and laying out flames on something else before I tackled to the Jeep. I have an extra CJ hood that was going to be to candidate but decided it would be cool if my Baja Bike was to match the Jeep since I'll be bringing it with everywhere I haul the Jeep. I wish I had taken before pics of it because it was pretty ugly. It was red with horribly faded black fenders and a lot of chipped paint. Anyway.. here it is now. It's a beast.. will do about 25 mph.  :)

Sprayed the base coat on the tank, fenders and pull rope assembly and let it dry overnight. (dk Shadow grey metallic)

Taped off and sprayed the flames (black)
I let it dry another night, then cleared everything with 2 coats, 15 minute tack time in between.
I let that dry another night, then used 400grit to sand off any nubs and imperfections and finally buffed it all out with a wool buff pad and machine polish. I think I'll hit the tank with another coat of clear and buff it again, but it looks good... just has a couple small ridges from the flames and I want it smooth.

Here's some progress pics. Basically I've got the tub base coat done (3 coats), plus 2 coats of clear. I'm in the process of and ready to repaint the tailgate and all hinges, etc.. tonight since they do not match. I did those with spray cans a while back.. they look real nice, but don't match the paint for the gun... just a little off tint, but too much for my taste. I've got a little sanding left to do on the hood and the fenders I built before I paint them; and I still need to repaint and clear coat the cage with the Dk Shadow Grey Metallic. Afterward I'll put it all back together and go ahead and do the flames, then I'll add at least 3 more coats of clear. (scratch resistance!) I also bought some new tail lights, steering wheel, and have a sheet of aluminum tread-plate I'm going to jazz somethings up with. After I'm done with the paint, I'm going move on to the console or the suspension. Frame also needs much attention... that's on the soon to do list.

Here's a little update on the Jeep. I've got kind of burn out there for a bit, but found some motivation tucked away and used it up last week.

Found a CJ Dash for free, compliments of Phil. (thanks)
I was going to use all the old gauges but decided a set of backlit gauges instead of dull old faintly illuminated CJ gauges would be much cooler while still maintaining a flat dash and clean look. I bought some Red 194bulbs instead of using the colored bulb cap. They don't look as good IMO.

Old crotchety dash.

Here is a few of the almost finished dash. I cut out a piece of steel from an old hood and filled in the speedometer hole, then cut 2 new holes for the tach and new speedo, plus 2 additional holes for fuel and water temp. I didn't take pics of all that, but you get the jest. Anyway, ALOT of sanding, primering, little bondo, and some painting... dash is all pretty and installed. Gauges are all working, save for the fuel gauge, I have to drop the tank this weekend to fix issue with sending unit. I'm also going to have to fab up a dash support for the center section of the dash; no big deal, I got the idea in my head and will knock it out this weekend too. also need to figure out something for the defrost vents but am not really concerned about it that much since I have a topless rig. Once done with this I can finally get my cage back in and start on the console.

I plan to build a slightly raised toggle switch panel that will to go over the top of the cutouts to the right of the steering wheel; that I can use for various stuffs.

Glove compartment installed, still have to add the grab handle and clean up some wiring.

This pic don't do much justice, they are really a nice red in the dark.

I opened the back of the cage back up.. decided I didn't like it all closed up and probably went a little overkill on the cage when I did it... so now it's nice and open; plenty of cargo room and still plenty strong.

I also cut out the body-bars I had done before and redid them... Now I could fit doors on the Jeep if only I hadn't sold mine.

Going to get the cage back in this week; and get the tube fenders, hood and grill ready to paint this weekend.

Cage going back in, redneck hoist setup worked great all 3 times I've had this in and out; though I think I'll upgrade it should I use it again.  :17:

Gap above dash looks big; buts it's only 4.5", same gap as a stock CJ dash if I can find one on the cheap, otherwise I'll build my own.

Post by: LoneWolf on 02/15/11 - 08:53AM
hahaha. You're correct; the new Ruby will be sticking to the mild trails for a while; at least until i can get it up on 35's. If I can get a few odds and ends wrapped up on this, and get someone to haul it out there, yes... but the front-end won't be painted by then.

Jimmy - I have a CJ dash pad that I will give you.  It is in my attic and maybe you can use it on yours.  You will have to vinyl dye it, but it is the right price! :)
Title: Re: Project Ruby Lee 2
Post by: LoneWolf on 02/17/11 - 10:46AM
Thank you Brad! I like that price. Will come by and get it. I'm going to have to figure out the business of the windshield wiper motor; because the cutout is different isn't it? I have a CJ windshield frame that I planned on using, but it won't fit right, at least with the rubber YJ gasket that goes on the bottom, I already bought it new and don't want to buy one again. Larry gave me a YJ dash top, but to use it I'll have to cut it up and drill holes in the flat of my dash... and it's gonna leave some things looking unfinished which will make me loose sleep; so I'm currently sanding down, cleaning up and doing some body work on the windshield frame that came off of it.
Title: Re: Project Ruby Lee 2
Post by: OJTV8CJ on 02/17/11 - 10:58AM
It has the cutout for the ww motor, which mounts on the windsheild frame.  Take it and if you can make it work - good.  If not, at least it isn't in my attic!  LOL

I've been busy... I painted the windshield frame and mounted.. I had a new after market CJ windshield frame but it wouldn't fit right so I used the old one that was on the Jeep, it needed a little body work, but it saved me from having to buy a new windshield. I had to buy some new paint and I can't tell for sure yet; but I think it might be a shade off. I hope not dammit...  >:( but if it is, at this point, oh well. I'll live with it. I'm hoping it's just the lighting in the garage, because I still have to paint the hood, grill and fenders.  :17:

(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17034-3/ws1.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/paint/ws1.JPG.html)

(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17037-3/ws2.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/paint/ws2.JPG.html)

I'm digging this look without the dash-top and since Brad never called, I guess he never dug out the CJ dash-top.  :106: :P
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17031-3/ws.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/paint/ws.JPG.html)

Since I put the waggy springs on the back the front has needed a little boost, I tried to squeeze some 4" BDS springs under the front but that wasn't happening; it would have shot the front and up way to high and interfered with the steering. CrazyLarry gave me some 2" lift springs, I cleaned them up a bit and added a leaf from my stock pack and slapped them in... I think this will do; I gained 1.5", gotta pull it out of the garage and eyeball it to see how it's sitting.

(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17043-3/leaf2.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/misc/leaf2.JPG.html)

Next I was on to the console. I'm building it in sections so I can take it apart; should I ever need to pull the cage or get to the transmission and transfer case.
First I had to get the twin sticks located better so that weren't in the way of shifter; reverse would hit them and they would hit up against the passenger seat... anyway; a little cut here and there and a dash of weld puddle and the skull twins are sitting pretty and ready for me to wrap a console around them. I haven't done it yet but I am going to heat and bend the shifter. The twins were way too far out of sync to heat and bend.

OFT WIT'HEES HED!  :P

I only had about 1/2" of clearance between the clutch fan and the stock YJ radiator which could have been ugly someday on the trail. I wasn't able to use a CJ radiator due to the steering box being in the way. I had just kind of slapped it in there and together before so I could start it and move it around and wheel it once or twice but now I've got it mounted sturdy with some fabbed up mounts and installed an electric fan. I just have it hooked up to a toggle on the dash and running through a 30amp relay so for now it'll run constantly. They do make a kit that's only $35 that will sense temps and activate the fan.. I'll be picking on of those up in the near future.

lower right radiator mount, also used to add structure back to a section of the grill I had to cut out in order to drop the hood a couple inches. It'll all be hidden by the winch.
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17140-6/radiatorfan3.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/misc/radiatorfan3.JPG.html)

(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17128-3/grill2.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/misc/grill2.JPG.html)

redneck spacer
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17134-6/radiatorfan1.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/misc/radiatorfan1.JPG.html)

This beast of a fan really sucks the air through the radiator, probably a good thing since I closed up the engine compartment quite a bit. I don't think I'll have any overheating issues. I think I'll have twice as much air flow now. Might need to put in a high/low switch for this fan. it looks like its touching the pully on the front of the engine.. the radiator is actually offset to the passenger side in order to clear some stuff.

Whats brand is the fan or is it out of something?

Is it mounted flush to the radiator, I cant tell?

Do you only have a low speed?

What kit are u going to use for the thermostat? Hayden oreilly?

Im doing a taurus fan in my jeep now with high/low and all that jazz thats why im asking.

Title: Re: Project Ruby Lee 2
Post by: LoneWolf on 03/ 1/11 - 02:11AM
It's a Chrysler fan, not sure what it came out of, phil gave it to me. It's one speed. It's mounted as close as I could to the radiator, I'd say about 1.25" maybe. When it kicks on the fan moves forward from it's shroud a bit so I couldn't put it right up on it without it hitting once it kicked on. It pulls SO much air I could have mounted it 6" away if I had room.  Right now I just have it wired to a 30amp relay and 20amp toggle mounted in the dash.  I am going to buy the kit from O'Reilly so it doesnt run all the time, just couldn't bring myself to spend $35 for it over the weekend... So I'll be going back for it. I'll find out what chrysler vehicle that's out of... I'm curious now.
Title: Re: Project Ruby Lee 2
Post by: LoneWolf on 03/ 7/11 - 11:48AM
I was told that fan came from a Ford Taurus, even though it says Chrysler on it.

Built a front bumper this past week and finished out the hoop and stinger. Probably will still weld on a D-Ring mount or something... not sure. Got a little weld-happy and warped it a smidge; but not enough to notice unless you break out a square.

Started off with some angle
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17273-3/bumper4.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/bumper/bumper4.JPG.html)

Made some tabs; angle the edges before I welded them on to give the weld puddle a place to go.
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17276-3/bumper5.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/bumper/bumper5.JPG.html)

Mounted to make sure it's gonna fit after I welded the tabs for the top on. Added an angle to the bottom of the bumper, I'm still going to mount a steering box skid plate off of this.
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17279-3/bumper6.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/bumper/bumper6.JPG.html)

Primed and ready for flat black
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17260-3/bumper.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/bumper/bumper.JPG.html)

The vertical pieces are for structural support should I decide to add a receiver or tow points to the front. this thing should be plenty stout for whatever.
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17264-3/bumper1.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/bumper/bumper1.JPG.html)

All painted and bolted on.
(http://ozarksjeepthing.com/p/d/17267-3/bumper2.JPG) (http://ozarksjeepthing.com/c/v/users/lonewolf/CJ/bumper/bumper2.JPG.html)

I think I'll add a cross bar or something at the bottom of the hoop; it looks a little empty there. Hood is finally painted.. that's the last of the painting; except for the console.

yeah I'll take it; I'm gonna get to working on the console not sure how it'll actually end up but I'm sure I'll use it in one form or another.

Here are a few shakedown pics. I still have a little rubbing issue on the rear corner of the rockers, but not enough to really matter. I think the steering needs to be worked on, seems like it turns less to the drivers side than the passenger side, but that may be the nature of the beast. I also I may have broken a transmission mount, was too dark and I was too tired to look when I got in. Heading back out today and will check that out.

We ran and GPS'ed, Ranch Road, Keller Circle, Larry's Hill, Turkey Cluster, Largo, Cougar Crossing, Cold Mountain, Rocker Knocker, Backwoods, Ridgeline, Guard Rail, Commanche Hollow, Wild Turkey, Disturbed, Snow Trail, Yellow Jacket, Eastwood, and Rattler (down) and Peewee Crossing.

I'll be back at it this weekend, and maybe later this week when the weather warms back up,then Brandon and I'll go out and GPS some of the stuff that I can't figure out or just haven't ran yet since I've been out of the action for over a year.
