Replacing shackle bushings
« on: 01/ 3/11 - 01:59PM »
I've never messed with leaf springs before so I was wondering the best way to go about replacing my leaf spring bushings?

Either press them out or burn them out with a torch.  Then install new ones.

What's the best way to go about removing the spring, do I need to jack the body up or will they stay in place when I remove the bolt?

If they have never been out before(ie stock springs) I would have a grinder with a cut off wheel on hand for the ones by the gas tank.

It has 4in fabtech springs and as far as I know they are only 5 or so years old.  I will still have the grinder on standby though.  The U bolts look good still.  I'm not sure why the bushing is breaking apart, hopefully putting poly ones in there will keep it from doing it again.

I ended up replacing the bushings and shackles in my garage by myself.  Once I figured out a good process it was easy but overall it took me 7 hours.  It was worth it though, I can safely drive down back roads and stay in my lane.  If anyone else needs to replace them I can help.
