4.10 Gear Gas Mileage
« on: 04/20/11 - 12:20PM »
I'm wanting to move from 3.07 gears with 33" tires to 4.10 gears with the same tires.  Can anyone help me understand what this will do to my gas mileage?  Also, what would this do to my general driving experience?

you could get better gas mileage you it will have more power and will be more fun to drive on an off road.

i got better mileage when i went from 3.55 to 4.10 in the xj. i even went up size to 31s. i say u will get better mileage because u will have more power to move those 33s. less strain on the motor.

Thanks guys!  I've got the gears being installed now.  At the last minute I had someone tell me it would make the mileage drop and make the overall experience horrible.  I thought otherwise and I'm glad you confirmed.

Would 4.10s be alright for 33s? I thought I needed to get 4.56s to run 33s...

I have 3.55s now on 31s and it sucks!

I'm running 33x12.50s with 4.10s and a 4 cylinder! It's actually not as bad as I thought it was going to be for driving hills and whatnot. Gas mileage is another story, I get about 9 on the highway, and 11 in town.

I would love have 4.88, but I don't drive it enough to justify spending the money on it. I will just wait till I upgrade axles and do it then. But for everyday driving it's not bad. I just don't see 5th gear on the highway very often.

Only in a jeep do you get worse gas mileage on the highway than in town. I have the same gas mileage problem but I have a 4.0 and 4.10 gears on 33" tires. If I use first gear, I can be in 3rd gear before I cross an intersection.

Your right on target, with a auto trans with no overdrive, 4.10 gears and 33's I bet in town mileage will improve but on the highway it may go down!

Just got the Jeep back this afternoon.  I've got a 5th gear again!  Just driving it around tonight I can already tell I made the right decision.  Now it's on to living on PB&J to pay for the install!
