8.25 Axle Prep/ Build
« on: 09/19/09 - 11:58PM »
Well i picked up the 8.25 rear axle today thanks to Austin "xj42". Its going to replace my Dana 35.

Been out in the elements so it needed some new paint!

Drained the Fluid

Took the carrier out, i plan to install 4.56s

With a wire brush and grinder i took it down to bare metal

After alot of grinding i primed the tubes

Once the pumpkin was cleaned down i primed it

I plan to coat the axle in black paint, once i put a 2nd coat of primer on.
Anybody recommend a good paint for this?

Rustoleum safety yellow seems to stick the best for 8.25s for some reason... Must be something in the yellow?

Seems to be some pink covers rolling around lately!

Make sure you keep track of shims if you remove anything.  Will save you a life time when setting up the axle.

Ok thats good info to know!  I have also been labeling everything i have been taking off.  I have not got to the ring and pinion yet.

Been looking at 4ws for Gears, what would you recommend Aaron?  Yukon or Superior?

I use hammered black, brush on.  One quart has painted two axles and a variety of other items.  Cheaper than spray cans IMO.

Aren't there side adjuster on this axle?  I know the pinion still has shims for depth, and I thought preload was through a crush sleeve?  Correct?

Ok ill look into the roll on paint, is it harder to apply around tight areas tho?

It can be, but it's not bad.

Honestly Yukon or Superior are both good gears.  There are several companies out there to avoid but neither of those is on that list.

I have done an 8.25 so can't swear how you set pinion preload.

Ok I was leaning towards superior gears. They are cheaper then Yukon, just want something that will last and are quite.

They are about the same to be honest in my opinion.  Either setup right will last a long time and be quiet.

Looks good Caleb. You might check into implement paint at one of the farm stores. It's thicker and will cover many imperfections.

Imperfections?  That thing was pristine when it changed hands.

Are you going to show it or wheel it?  Dang, just slap some black paint on there and go.  Gonna get scratched up anyway...
I'd put something funny here, but you probably wouldn't get it anyway...
